The binary convention: 512KB = 524,288 bytes. Every exported file lands at or under that size, or you get the closest possible result with a clear notice.
My image came out bigger than the target — why?
That can happen when a photo carries more detail than the lowest useful quality can preserve — typically a large, busy image squeezed to a small number. The closest result is delivered and clearly marked as not reaching the target.
Do PNG files stay PNG?
No. Target compression needs a quality dial, so PNG (and GIF/BMP) sources export as JPG. JPG and WebP keep their format.
